Groundlvl was commissioned by ACCIONA to document a major milestone on the Western Harbour Tunnel — the successful breakthrough at the North Sydney mainline tunnel portal into the Warringah Freeway. As the only above-ground breakthrough on this city-shaping project, it represents a significant moment in Sydney’s future transport network.
With the tunnel set for completion in 2028, this project aims to reduce congestion, improve travel times, and deliver a safer and more efficient harbour crossing. NSW Premier Chris Minns described it as a “city-defining project,” and this milestone underscores that vision.
The Job
Our scope included the creation of a high-impact construction video to document the breakthrough event. We provided aerial drone footage to capture scale and site integration, along with a library of detailed photography highlighting the breakthrough process, machinery in motion, and on-site collaboration. Content was edited for both internal communications and social media use, tailored specifically to ACCIONA’s project and brand requirements. Our team operated fully compliant with site safety
The Method
The shoot was carried out under strict safety and access conditions, with a live construction environment adjacent to major road infrastructure. Timing was critical, with a narrow window to capture the breakthrough as it occurred. Balancing the need to visually convey large-scale progress while also showcasing fine technical detail within a tight timeframe posed a creative and logistical challenge.
The Coverage
We deployed a specialist two-person crew with a focus on flexibility and rapid content capture. Using handheld cameras, we filmed close-up sequences of the breakthrough operation, highlighting the tools, techniques, and people involved.
The Final Result
The final suite of content was used to communicate the milestone both internally and publicly. ACCIONA leveraged the video and photography across their digital channels, presentations, and media briefings, reinforcing the progress and scale of the Western Harbour Tunnel. The content helped to raise public awareness, acknowledge the efforts of the project team, and celebrate a key turning point in one of Sydney’s most significant infrastructure initiatives.
