Western Harbour Tunnel Stage 2

Acciona

Groundlvl Media was proud to capture a major milestone in Sydney’s infrastructure development—the first anniversary of tunnelling for Stage 2 of the Western Harbour Tunnel project in collaboration with Transport for NSW. Over the past year, remarkable progress has been made, with six roadheaders excavating towards Sydney Harbour, each removing an impressive 1,000 tonnes of rock daily—equivalent to the weight of 91 buses.

With 2.9km of the 7.6km tunnel length already completed, the project is advancing on schedule while prioritizing environmental sustainability through spoil and water reuse and proactive engagement with the local community to minimize disruptions. Looking ahead, by late 2025, the project will take a major leap forward with the deployment of the largest tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in the southern hemisphere to tunnel under Sydney Harbour.

This project is a game-changer for Sydney’s transport network.

The Job
Groundlvl Media was tasked with producing a high-impact visual narrative that captured the scale, complexity, and progress of the Western Harbour Tunnel Stage 2 over its first 12 months of tunnelling. The deliverables included a cinematic project video documenting the tunnelling progress, featuring drone and underground footage, worker interviews, and time-lapse sequences of excavation. High-resolution imagery was also provided for Transport for NSW’s public communications and media releases.
The Method
This project presented several challenges, including filming in an active tunnelling environment, requiring careful coordination with site teams to operate safely in confined spaces. Limited lighting and airborne dust required specialized camera techniques to ensure high-quality footage. Additionally, capturing the sheer scale of excavation efforts and the intricate work of the roadheaders meant deploying a combination of wide aerial views and close-up underground shots to tell the full story.
The Coverage
Our approach was to blend documentary storytelling with cinematic visuals, showcasing not just the progress but the people, technology, and innovation driving the project. We collaborated closely with project engineers and site managers to capture key phases of the tunnelling process without disrupting operations. A mix of dynamic motion shots, slow-motion captures, and on-site interviews provided a compelling look at the progress made so far and what’s to come.
The Final Result
The final video successfully highlighted one year of remarkable achievements, reinforcing the scale and significance of the Western Harbour Tunnel while communicating the vision and impact of the project to both industry professionals and the wider community. The content was well-received by Transport for NSW, Acciona, and key stakeholders, serving as a valuable asset for public engagement, project updates, and promotional use.
