WesTrac Cat Operator Challenge Showcases Australia’s Best

WesTrac NSW round of the Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge saw the best of the best go head-to-head in Tomago — in a high-energy, precision-driven competition designed to test the limits of machine control, finesse, and operator skill.

This prestigious global initiative, hosted by Caterpillar and facilitated across multiple WesTrac branches, provides a unique platform for machine operators to demonstrate their ability in real-world scenarios. Challenges ranged from digging and trenching to obstacle navigation and tight-load handling — all conducted under time pressure and strict accuracy guidelines.

Among the crowd of industry professionals, supporters, and WesTrac teams, was Andrew Moussa, founder of Groundlvl Media, who was invited to attend and document the full scope of the day’s action. As a leading content creator in the construction and heavy equipment space, Andrew was there not just to film — but to capture the emotion, the energy, and the unsung talent behind the controls.

“We invited Andrew and his team to one of our biggest events of the year to capture some high-quality content. I found the Groundlvl team to be professional, diligent, efficient, and safe. They asked all the right questions, executed the task list with no issues, and ended up knocking the brief out of the park. They were able to turn around an incredible video on the day of the event, within hours – something I’d never seen done so fast in 7+ years working in earthmoving content.” Chris Gander – WesTrac

recision Meets Passion

The Operator Challenge isn’t just about machinery — it’s about people. The event put the spotlight on the hands and minds that power Australia’s construction industry. Each competitor brought years of experience, discipline, and instinct to the cab, performing tasks with a level of control that can only come from deep operational knowledge.

“This wasn’t just a competition,” said Andrew. “It was a celebration of the tradespeople who work in silence, behind the scenes of the infrastructure that shapes our cities. The precision and calm I saw inside those cabs was next-level. These guys are true professionals.”

Capturing the Moment

Throughout the day, Andrew captured a wide range of dynamic content, from operator interviews and machine close-ups to crowd reactions and behind-the-scenes moments. Drone footage, time-lapse sequences, and slow-motion highlights were all part of the visual toolkit used to tell the story of the event through Groundlvl’s signature media style.

Expect to see a full recap video and social media highlights dropping soon across WesTrac and Groundlvl platforms.

A Step Toward Global Recognition

The stakes at the Tomago event were high. The winning operator will advance to represent NSW at the finals — on the international stage at Caterpillar’s global event. More than just bragging rights, the challenge showcases the capability of Australian operators on a world scale.

“We often highlight machinery, but what I saw today was a reminder that it’s the human element that sets our industry apart. These operators are elite, and they deserve global recognition,” Andrew added.

About the Operator Challenge

The Global Operator Challenge was launched by Caterpillar to spotlight the skills of machine operators around the world. It provides a competitive but supportive environment for participants to showcase how efficient, safe, and skilled they are with advanced construction machinery. From excavators to dozers and wheel loaders, the competition tests a wide range of equipment across varied tasks.

The atmosphere was electric, with crews, families, and industry professionals coming together to cheer on competitors and celebrate the world-class talent the Australian construction industry has to offer.

“It’s days like this that really show the heart of our industry,” said Andrew. “From the roar of the engines to the focus in each operator’s eyes, there’s a real sense of pride in every moment. It was a privilege to be on the ground capturing it all.”

The winner of the NSW round, Tim from Daracon Group now moves forward to represent the region on a national stage — with hopes of making it all the way to the global final.
